Middle- and long-distance runners from Ethiopia and Kenya hold over 90% of all-time world records and current top-10 positions in world-event rankings. Moreover, these successful athletes come from localized ethnic subgroups within their respective countries.1,2 The Arsi region of Ethiopia contains roughly 5% of the Ethiopian population but accounted for 14 of the 23 distance runners selected for the country’s 2008 Olympic team.
Similarly, the Kalenjin tribe of Kenya has less than 0.1% of the world’s population, yet members of this tribe have together won nearly 50 Olympic medals in middle- and long-distance events.
